‘Sometimes in life you get lucky…’

‘The day I contacted Paul Croxton of Ascend, I couldn’t believe just how lucky.

Having worked with designers in fmcgs, art & publishing for over ten years, I have seen many types of designers. From high end conceptualists to solid middleweights through to basic artworkers. At the top end, some were highly intellectual but lacked interpersonal skills others were very personable, sure and steady but lacked the vital creativity to re-energise a brand/product image. Then there were the quirky one with creative juices bubbling, who could design an amazing Indie CD cover but were unreliable with poor time management and often failed to absorb the commercial element involved in design.

Thankfully Paul Croxton was the complete package, a designer who could grasp the brief and run with it. Run with it? Sorry, I meant sprint with it. Within a few days of the briefing I was getting quotes, numerous mock-ups and leadtimes. It was impressive to say the least.

My remit as Head of Marketing at Inside Careers was to rejuvenate the brand, grow the product portfolio and integrate the marketing communications.

Part of the implementation of the new product development was to introduce a lifestyle magazine range for graduates starting their careers in finance, business and management. With Paul’s creative input and cutting edge design, we delivered high quality A4 glossy (but substantial) publications that fulfilled every part of what might have been considered a tricky project.

So delighted was I with the magazine design, I asked Paul if he would also design the Inside Careers website. Again this was a tough ask because the designs had to fit with the back end of the site. Once again though, Paul delivered the goods and again in a short period of time. Remarkable given that within Inside Careers website infrastructure there are 18 micro-sites, each with seven quite different sections.

With the magazines and website completed, I then asked Paul to design the Inside Careers Media Pack – a quite different brief given that it was not targeting students/graduates but to blue chip companies. Suffice to say, the production was excellent and again Paul’s expertise proved invaluable – especially when simplifying the complex sales packages.

Since these three substantial jobs, I have asked Paul to design business cards, flyers, posters, exhibition graphics, adverts and called on his advice on corporate communications and web design.

Paul is more than just a designer. Working with him you’ll find an refreshing honesty, a straight shooter who tells it as it is. Not just a designer with a mastery of all the tricks of the trade, Paul is also commercially aware and marketing savvy. It’s because of this combination of qualities that I would have no hesitation in recommending him for any design work.’
